Education and Early Life
Joseph Dawson III was born in 1970 in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He went to The Citadel, a military college, where he earned his first degree. Later, he studied law at the University of South Carolina School of Law and became a lawyer.
Military Service
Before becoming a judge, Joseph Dawson III served in the military. From 1999 to 2009, he was a judge advocate general for the South Carolina Army National Guard. This means he was a lawyer who worked for the military, giving legal advice and handling legal matters for soldiers. In 2009, he also served as a judge advocate general in the U.S. Army Reserve. He earned several awards for his service and reached the rank of Captain.
Legal Career Before Becoming a Judge
From 2001 to 2020, Mr. Dawson had his own law firm. He helped people and small businesses with their legal issues, especially in civil litigation, which involves disagreements between people or organizations. He also worked as the County Attorney for Charleston County, South Carolina. In this role, he was in charge of all legal matters for the county government and its officials.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 2020, President Donald Trump decided to nominate Joseph Dawson III to become a federal judge. This meant he was chosen to fill a vacant judge position in the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. Senator Tim Scott recommended him for the role.
His nomination went through a process in the United States Senate. First, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing to review his qualifications. Then, the committee voted to approve his nomination. Finally, the full United States Senate voted to confirm him. He officially became a judge on December 22, 2020.
After he became a judge, there was a discussion about a contract he had with Charleston County. To make sure everything was clear and fair, the contract was changed. This change meant he would not receive any money from certain large legal cases the county was involved in.
