Joseph Goodrich (born May 12, 1800 – died October 9, 1867) was an important American pioneer, businessman, and politician. He is best known for founding the town of Milton, Wisconsin, and Milton College. He also played a big part in helping people escape slavery through the Underground Railroad.

Joseph Goodrich was a person who helped build new communities and businesses in early America. He was a pioneer, meaning he was among the first to settle in a new area. Early Life and Moving West

Joseph Goodrich was born in Hancock, Massachusetts. When he was 12 years old, in 1812, he moved to Stephentown, New York. There, he lived with his uncle and learned about farming. He was also a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church.

In 1819, Joseph moved again, this time to Alfred, New York. He started several businesses there. He owned a sawmill, which cut wood, a store where people could buy goods, and a hotel for travelers.

Building a Community in Milton

In 1839, Joseph Goodrich and his family decided to move even further west. They traveled to a place called Prairie du Lac in the Wisconsin Territory. This area was not yet a state. Joseph saw great potential in this new land.

He worked hard to create a new settlement. He founded the village of Milton, Wisconsin. This town was named after the famous English poet, John Milton. Joseph Goodrich helped build homes, businesses, and a strong community there.

Founding Milton College

Joseph Goodrich believed strongly in education. He wanted to make sure that young people in his new town had a chance to learn. Because of his efforts, Milton College was founded in Milton, Wisconsin. This college provided higher education for many students.

Helping People on the Underground Railroad

Joseph Goodrich was a strong supporter of the abolitionist movement. This movement worked to end slavery in the United States. He believed that all people should be free.

To help enslaved people escape to freedom, Joseph Goodrich used his own home, the Milton House. This house became a secret stop on the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was not a real railroad. Instead, it was a network of secret routes and safe houses. Brave people, called "conductors," helped enslaved individuals travel north to freedom. Joseph Goodrich risked his own safety to help others find their freedom.

A Leader in Politics

Joseph Goodrich also served in government. In 1855, he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. This is a part of the state's government that makes laws. He served as a member of the Republican Party. At that time, the Republican Party was against slavery. Joseph Goodrich continued to work for what he believed in, both in his community and in politics.

Joseph Goodrich passed away on October 9, 1867. He left behind a legacy as a founder, businessman, and a brave supporter of freedom.
