Joseph Jackson Gravely (born September 25, 1828 – died April 28, 1872) was an important person in American history. He was a politician, a lawyer, and a teacher in the 1800s. He lived in both Virginia and Missouri.

A Career in Law and Politics

After teaching, Joseph Gravely decided to study law. He worked hard and became a lawyer. He started his law practice in Virginia. In 1853 and 1854, he served in the Virginia House of Delegates. This was a group of lawmakers in Virginia.

In 1854, Joseph Gravely moved to Missouri. He continued his work in politics there. In 1860, he was chosen to be a delegate. This meant he helped write new rules for Missouri at the Missouri Constitutional Convention.

Serving During the Civil War

The American Civil War was a very difficult time in American history. Joseph Gravely chose to serve in the Union Army. He became a colonel, which is a high rank in the military. He led the 8th Missouri State Militia Cavalry Regiment.

While serving in the war, he also continued his political work. He was a member of the Missouri State Senate in 1862 and again in 1864.

Later Political Career

After the Civil War, Joseph Gravely continued to be active in politics. In 1866, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served in Congress from 1867 to 1869.

In 1870, he was elected the 15th Lieutenant Governor of Missouri. He served under Governor Benjamin Gratz Brown. Joseph Gravely held this important position from 1871 until his death.

Joseph Gravely passed away on April 28, 1872. He died in Stockton, Missouri. He was buried in Lindley Prairie Cemetery, near Bear Creek, Missouri.
