A Heroic Act in Battle
Sergeant Lister showed amazing bravery during a battle in Belgium. His company was trying to move forward, but they were stopped by heavy machine-gun fire. The shots were coming from a small concrete shelter called a pillbox.
Facing the Enemy Alone
Seeing his comrades stuck, Sergeant Lister bravely ran ahead of his men. He found the machine gun that was causing trouble. He quickly shot two of the enemy gunners. The remaining gunners then gave up and surrendered.
Capturing Many Soldiers
After dealing with the machine gun, Sergeant Lister went to the pillbox. He shouted for the soldiers inside to surrender. They did, except for one person whom he had to shoot. After this, about 100 enemy soldiers came out from nearby shell-holes and surrendered to him.
Life After the War
Sergeant Joseph Lister survived World War I. He lived until 1963, passing away at 76 years old. He is buried in Willow Grove Cemetery in Reddish, England.
