Joseph Ridgeway Taylor Coates (died September 21, 1921) was an American lawyer and politician from Pennsylvania. He served as the mayor of Chester, Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1893. Before becoming mayor, he was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He fought in many important battles of the war.
Military Service in the Civil War
In 1861, Joseph Coates joined the army as a First Lieutenant. He was part of the 1st Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment, also known as the 30th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. His group was Company C, which was recruited from Chester.
Coates and Company C fought in several major battles of the Civil War. These included the Battle of Mechanicsville, the Battle of New Market, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Bristoe Station, and the Battle of Bethesda Church.
He was promoted from First Lieutenant to Captain in 1862. Later, in 1864, he became a Major by a special military honor called a brevet. Coates finished his military service and left the army on June 13, 1864.
Life and Public Service
After his military service, Joseph Coates became a lawyer in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He also held important public offices.
From 1865 to 1869, Coates served as the Postmaster of the Chester Post Office. Later, he was elected as the mayor of Chester, Pennsylvania. He served as mayor for six years, from 1887 to 1893. After his term, John B. Hinkson became the next mayor.
Joseph Coates passed away on September 21, 1921. He was buried at the Chester Rural Cemetery in Chester, Pennsylvania.
