Joseph Shaw (legal writer) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Joseph Shaw (1671–1733) was an English writer who focused on law. He wrote important books that helped people understand legal rules, especially those for local communities. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, a group for top scientists and thinkers.

Joseph Shaw's Early Life and Studies

Joseph Shaw was the son of John Shaw from London. He started his studies at Trinity College, Oxford, in 1687. Later, in 1695, he joined the Middle Temple. This was a special place in London where people trained to become lawyers.

Travels and Published Letters

Around the year 1700, Joseph Shaw went on a journey. He traveled through Holland, a region called Flanders (which is now part of Belgium), and some parts of France. During his travels, he wrote many letters to his good friend, Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury. These letters shared his observations about the countries he visited. They were later published in 1709. His writings gave interesting details about these places during a time of peace after a big agreement called the Treaty of Ryswick. In 1703, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This was a great honor for his work and observations.

Legal Writings and Later Years

Later in his life, Joseph Shaw settled in a town called Epsom in Surrey, England. There, he spent his time studying law very deeply. In 1728, he published a book called The Practical Justice of the Peace. This book became very popular and was printed six times by 1756.

Just before he passed away, he published another important book. It was called Parish Law. This book was dedicated to his friend, Sir John Fortescue Aland, who was a judge. Parish Law became a standard book for understanding local community laws. It was even published with another legal book in the 1800s, and its last edition came out in 1895.

Joseph Shaw died in Clapham on October 24, 1733. He had a son, also named Joseph, who later lived in Epsom.
