What Does the Marsh House Look Like?

The Marsh House farm is on the north side of Quechee Main Street. The Ottauquechee River is right across the street. The river bends south here. Dewey's Pond is also nearby to the east.

Buildings on the Property

The property has several buildings. These include the main house. There are also three barns and a wagon shed. The wagon shed also served as a hen house.

The Main House

The main house faces south. It is 2-1/2 stories tall. It has a main block with other sections. These sections extend to the back of the house. The house has a simple, old-fashioned style. It has a front door that is set back. There are narrow windows on each side of the door. The doorway is framed by flat columns. A decorative top piece sits above them. Inside, the house has a common layout. It has a central hallway. Many original parts and fixtures are still there.

Other Farm Buildings

North of the house is a large cow barn. This barn was built around the 1870s. A smaller horse barn is connected to it. These barns have been changed. They are now part of the inn. To the west of these barns are a corn barn. There is also the hen house and wagon shed.

Who Was Joseph Marsh?

The Marsh family was among the first to get land. This was in the Quechee area. The town of Hartford was officially started in 1761. Joseph Marsh was an important person in the area.

Joseph Marsh's Role in History

He led a group of soldiers. This was during the American Revolutionary War. He also helped write the rules for the new Vermont Republic. This happened in 1777. Vermont was an independent state at that time. Later, Joseph Marsh served as lieutenant governor. He worked under Thomas Chittenden.

Building and Moving the House

Joseph Marsh built this house in 1793. It was not always in its current spot. It used to be a short distance east and south. The house had to be moved. This happened in the 1960s. The United States Army Corps of Engineers moved it. They were working on a flood control project.

Famous Residents of the Marsh House

Joseph Marsh's son, Charles, grew up here. Charles became a well-known lawyer. He was also the father of George Perkins Marsh. George Perkins Marsh was a famous environmentalist. A later owner was John Porter. He was a local businessman and politician. He served in the state government. He also worked for several local banks.

How the House Became an Inn

In 1959, the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) took the property. They needed it for the North Hartland Dam project. This project was for flood control. The owners were able to get the house back. They also got the remaining farm buildings. They had to move them. Or they had to raise them above the high-water level. This was required by the ACE. Some buildings were not moved. They were buried under dirt. They are still there today. In 1975, the property opened as the Quechee Inn.
