Playing Career Highlights
Starting in the NFL
After the 2008 NFL draft, Josh Bell was not chosen by any team. However, the San Diego Chargers signed him as an undrafted free agent. This means he joined the team even though he wasn't drafted. He was released by the Chargers in August 2008.
Time with the Broncos
On September 24, 2008, Bell joined the Denver Broncos' practice squad. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but don't usually play in games. They can be moved to the main team if needed.
Later, he was moved to the Broncos' active roster. This happened after another player, Champ Bailey, got injured. In his first year, Bell played in nine games. He started five of those games. He made 34 tackles and stopped four passes. In 2009, he was placed on injured reserve because of an injury. This meant he couldn't play for a while.
Playing for the Packers
On November 23, 2009, the Green Bay Packers signed Josh Bell. They needed a player after Al Harris had a season-ending injury. Bell was later placed on Injured Reserve again in August 2010.
Moving to the CFL
With the BC Lions
Josh Bell signed with the BC Lions in the CFL on May 22, 2012. He played with them for two seasons. In his first year, he played a limited amount. He played on defense and special teams. In his second year, he made 45 tackles and had one interception.
Time with the Calgary Stampeders
On February 12, 2014, Bell joined the Calgary Stampeders as a free agent. This meant he could sign with any team he wanted. He played all 18 games as a defensive back for the Stampeders in the 2014 CFL season. He finished that season with 56 tackles and two interceptions. He also made two special teams tackles. Bell signed a new contract with the Stampeders in February 2015.
He announced he was retiring as a player on February 1, 2018.
Coaching Career
Coaching the Stampeders
On the same day he stopped playing, Josh Bell became a coach. He joined the Calgary Stampeders' staff as the defensive backs coach for the 2018 season. In his first year as a coach, he helped the Stampeders win the Grey Cup. This was his second Grey Cup championship. After the 2020 CFL season was cancelled, Bell left the Stampeders. This was because of new rules about how much teams could spend on their football staff.
With the Toronto Argonauts
On May 14, 2021, Josh Bell joined the Toronto Argonauts. He became their defensive backs coach. He helped the Argonauts win the 109th Grey Cup in 2022. He coached with the Argonauts for three years.
