Josh Bell's Football Journey
Playing in the NFL
Starting with the Chargers
After college, Josh Bell was not chosen in the 2008 NFL draft. However, the San Diego Chargers signed him as a free agent. This means they offered him a contract even though he wasn't drafted. He was later released by the team in August.
Time with the Broncos
On September 24, 2008, Bell joined the practice squad of the Denver Broncos. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but are not on the main roster. He was moved to the main team on October 27. This happened after another player, Champ Bailey, got injured.
In his first year, Bell played in nine games. He started five of those games. He made 34 tackles and helped stop four passes. In September 2009, he was placed on injured reserve. This meant he couldn't play because of an injury. The Broncos later released him.
Joining the Packers
On November 23, 2009, the Green Bay Packers signed Josh Bell. They needed a new player after Al Harris had a season-ending injury. Bell was later placed on injured reserve again in August 2010.
Playing in the CFL
With the BC Lions
Josh Bell signed with the BC Lions on May 22, 2012. He played for this Canadian team for two seasons. In his first year with the Lions, he played a limited amount. He helped out on defense and special teams. In his second year, Bell made 45 tackles and caught one interception.
Becoming a Calgary Stampeder
On February 12, 2014, Bell signed with the Calgary Stampeders. He joined his former defensive coordinator, Rich Stubler, there. Bell started all 18 games as a defensive back for the Stampeders in the 2014 CFL season. He finished that season with 56 tackles and two interceptions. He also made two special teams tackles.
Bell signed a contract extension with the Stampeders in February 2015. He announced his retirement as a player on February 1, 2018.
Josh Bell's Coaching Career
Coaching the Stampeders
The same day he stopped playing, Josh Bell started coaching. He joined the Calgary Stampeders as their new defensive backs coach for the 2018 season. In his first year as a coach, he helped the Stampeders win the 106th Grey Cup. This was his second Grey Cup championship.
After the 2020 CFL season was cancelled, Bell left the Stampeders. This was due to new rules about how much teams could spend on their football staff.
Coaching the Argonauts
On May 14, 2021, Josh Bell became the defensive backs coach for the Toronto Argonauts. He helped the Argonauts win the 109th Grey Cup in their 2022 season. He coached with the Argonauts for three years.
