Josh Earnest is an American political advisor. He was the White House Press Secretary for President Barack Obama. This important job means he spoke for the President to the news media. He held this role from 2014 to 2017. He was the 29th person to be the White House Press Secretary. Today, he works as an executive for United Airlines.

Early Life and School

Josh Earnest was born on January 22, 1975. He grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. His father was an athletic director, and his mother was a psychologist.

He went to a private school called The Barstow School. He was able to attend thanks to a scholarship. In 1997, he graduated from Rice University. He studied political science and policy there.

His Career in Politics

After college, Josh Earnest started working in politics. He helped with a mayoral election in Houston in 1997. Later, he worked for a U.S. congressman from 2002 to 2003.

Working for the Democratic Party

From 2003 to 2006, Earnest worked for the Democratic National Committee. This group helps the Democratic Party with its goals. He also helped with a governor's election campaign in Florida in 2006.

Joining Obama's Campaign

In 2006, Earnest moved to Iowa. He worked for a presidential campaign there. In March 2007, he joined Barack Obama's presidential campaign. He helped share Obama's message in Iowa.

After Obama won the Iowa caucus, Earnest continued to work on the campaign. He helped in other states like South Carolina and Pennsylvania. During the 2008 election, he was a deputy communications director.

At the White House

After Obama became president, Josh Earnest moved to Washington, D.C.. He started working at the White House on January 21, 2009. He was a deputy press secretary at first.

He later became the principal deputy White House press secretary. He sometimes filled in for the main press secretary during news briefings. Earnest also hosted "West Wing Week." This was an online video series about President Obama's weekly activities.

Becoming Press Secretary

On May 30, 2014, President Obama announced that Josh Earnest would become the new White House Press Secretary. He took over from Jay Carney. This is a very important job. The Press Secretary speaks for the President every day.

In 2015, many journalists voted him the most helpful press official. They also said he was the best White House Press Secretary. He gave his last press briefing on January 17, 2017. President Obama surprised him there and praised his service.

After the White House

After leaving the White House, Earnest became a political analyst. He worked for NBC News and MSNBC starting in March 2017. He shared his thoughts on political events.

In May 2018, he started working for United Airlines. He became their Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer. In September 2023, he was promoted to Executive Vice President of Communications and Advertising. He also helps an organization called Let America Vote. This group works to make sure everyone can vote easily.

Personal Life

Josh Earnest married Natalie Wyeth in August 2012. They had a Christian ceremony in Washington, D.C. Natalie Wyeth's family includes famous artists and engineers. They have a son and a daughter.
