Josh Gattis (born January 15, 1984) is an American college football coach and former defensive back. He recently served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Maryland. As of March 2025, he is an Offensive Analyst for the Syracuse team.

Josh Gattis: A Football Journey
Josh Gattis was born in Durham, North Carolina. He has had an exciting career in football, first as a player and then as a coach. He is known for his work with wide receivers and for leading successful offenses.
Playing Days at Wake Forest
Gattis played college football at Wake Forest University. He was a safety, which is a defensive position. In 2005, during his junior year, he made five interceptions and 72 tackles. He was recognized as a second-team All-ACC player.
His senior year in 2006 was one of the best seasons for Wake Forest football. The team won the ACC championship for only the second time in school history. They also played in their first-ever Orange Bowl game. That year, Gattis had five interceptions and 82 tackles. He was named a first-team All-ACC player.
Time in the NFL
After college, Gattis was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL draft. He was the 150th player picked overall. Later, he joined the Chicago Bears. He played in five games for the Bears in 2007 and made one tackle.
Coaching Career Highlights
After his playing career, Josh Gattis moved into coaching. He quickly became known for his ability to develop talented players and create strong offenses.
Early Coaching Roles
Gattis started his coaching journey as a graduate assistant at North Carolina in 2010. The next year, in 2011, he became the wide receivers coach at Western Michigan. While there, he coached Jordan White, who was a highly recognized wide receiver.
In 2012, Gattis joined Vanderbilt University. He coached wide receivers and helped with recruiting new players for the offense. During his time at Vanderbilt, wide receiver Jordan Matthews was named first-team All-SEC for two years in a row.
Moving to Penn State and Alabama
Gattis followed head coach James Franklin to Penn State in 2014. He continued in the same role, coaching wide receivers and coordinating the passing game and offensive recruiting.
On January 25, 2018, Gattis was hired by Alabama. He worked as a co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach during the 2018 season. He helped lead an offense that was one of the highest-scoring in the country. He also coached Jerry Jeudy, who won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best wide receiver.
Leading Offenses at Michigan and Miami
On January 10, 2019, Gattis became the offensive coordinator at Michigan. In 2021, he won the Broyles Award, which is given to the top assistant coach in college football. Under his leadership, Michigan's offense helped the team win the Big Ten Conference Championship. They also made it to the College Football Playoff.
In February 2022, Gattis took on the role of offensive coordinator at the University of Miami Hurricanes. He stayed there for one season.
Maryland and Syracuse
In March 2023, Gattis was hired as the offensive coordinator at Maryland. He served in this position for two seasons.
As of March 2025, Josh Gattis joined the Syracuse football team as an Offensive Analyst.
