José Balitón Nísperos (born December 30, 1887 – died September 1, 1922) was a brave soldier from the Philippine Scouts. He earned the highest military award in the United States, called the Medal of Honor. He received this medal during a conflict known as the Moro Rebellion.

José Nísperos made history as the very first person of Asian background to ever receive the Medal of Honor. On September 24, 1911, in a place called Lapurap, Basilan, in the Philippines, Nísperos showed incredible courage. He was part of the U.S. Army's 34th Company of the Philippine Scouts. Even though he was badly hurt, he bravely defended his unit's position against local fighters armed with spears. His amazing bravery was recognized when he was given the Medal of Honor in February 1913 by Brigadier General Bell.

Early Military Life

José Nísperos joined the Philippine Scouts in December 1907. The Philippine Scouts were a special part of the United States Army. They were made up of Filipino soldiers.

A Hero's Courage

Nísperos was a Corporal, which is a specific rank in the army. During the battle where he earned his medal, he was severely wounded. Despite his injuries, he kept fighting to protect his fellow soldiers. His actions saved his unit from danger.

After the Military

Because of the serious wounds he received, José Nísperos was honorably discharged from the army in June 1912. This means he had to leave the military due to his injuries. He was discharged at the rank of Corporal. After his military service, he became a Police Officer.
