José Balitón Nísperos (born December 30, 1887 – died September 1, 1922) was a brave soldier from the Philippine Scouts. He earned the highest military award in the United States, called the Medal of Honor. He received this medal during a conflict known as the Moro Rebellion.
José Nísperos made history as the very first person of Asian background to ever receive the Medal of Honor. On September 24, 1911, in a place called Lapurap, Basilan, in the Philippines, Nísperos showed incredible courage. He was part of the U.S. Army's 34th Company of the Philippine Scouts. Even though he was badly hurt, he bravely defended his unit's position against local fighters armed with spears. His amazing bravery was recognized when he was given the Medal of Honor in February 1913 by Brigadier General Bell.
