José Batlle y Ordóñez is a small town in the northwest of the Lavalleja Department in Uruguay. It's a peaceful place with a rich history, named after an important former president of Uruguay.
Town's Location
This town is found where two main roads meet: Route 7 and Route 14. It's about 24 kilometers (about 15 miles) west of another town called Zapicán. José Batlle y Ordóñez is also right on the edge of the Florida Department.
The town is very close to Nico Pérez. Route 7 and the railroad tracks separate parts of these two towns. A bridge helps people and vehicles cross over the tracks to connect them.
A Look at History
The area where José Batlle y Ordóñez now stands first became a populated place on December 9, 1883. This new village was originally called "Nico Pérez." It was officially recognized by the government on April 10, 1896.
Later, on March 19, 1907, the village's name was changed. A special law (Ley Nº 3.148) renamed it "José Batlle y Ordóñez." This was done to honor José Batlle y Ordóñez, who was a very important president of Uruguay. He served multiple terms and brought many changes to the country.
Interestingly, the part of the original village that was located in the Florida Department kept the name "Nico Pérez." So, today, you have two towns very close to each other, sharing a past but with different names.
