José Javier Hombrados (born on April 7, 1972) is a famous Spanish former handball player. He was a goalkeeper for the Spanish national team.

Hombrados holds a special record in Spanish handball. He has played more games than anyone else in the top Spanish league, Liga ASOBAL. He is the only player with over 700 appearances! He is also the only goalkeeper to win the EHF Champions League with three different clubs.

A Champion's Journey: Hombrados' Career

Starting Out in Handball

José Javier Hombrados began his handball journey at a club called BM Safa in Barcelona. His very first game in a professional league was for Atlético Madrid. In 1991, his team reached the final of the Copa del Rey, which is a big cup competition in Spain.

Winning Big with Teka

In 1993, Hombrados joined Teka. This was a very successful time for him. He helped Teka win the Spanish Championship in 1994. The next year, 1995, was even better! They won the EHF Champions League, which is the biggest club competition in Europe. They also won the Copa del Rey again.

Moving to New Teams

After a short time with SD Teucro, Hombrados moved to Ademar León. Here, he continued to win important trophies. He helped his team win the Copa ASOBAL and the EHF Cup Winners' Cup. These are both major handball competitions.

Success with San Antonio and Ciudad Real

In 2000, Hombrados joined SDC San Antonio. In his first year there, he won the 2000-01 EHF Champions League again! He also won the IHF Super Globe and another Copa del Rey. The next year, his team won the Spanish league.

He then played for BM Ciudad Real for many years, starting in 2002. He stayed with them until 2013. For the last two years, the team played under the name Atlético Madrid.

Later Career and Retirement

In 2013, Hombrados played for a Qatari club called Qatari Al Sadd in the IHF Super Globe tournament. After that, he moved to Germany and played for the club HSG Wetzlar.

In 2015, he joined BM Guadalajara. He played there until he retired from handball after the 2020-21 season. He was 49 years old when he retired, after playing for 29 seasons and in 770 games!

Throughout his long career, Hombrados had a unique tradition. His shirt number for each season was always the same as his age at the start of that season.
