José Julio Rodríguez Fernández (born June 8, 1948) is a Spanish general. He was a very important leader in the Spanish Air Force. From 2008 to 2012, he was the Chief of the Defence Staff. This means he was the top military officer in Spain.
He officially moved to the reserve forces on December 31, 2011. On July 18, 2008, General Rodríguez Fernández became the Chief of the Defence Staff. He took over from Felix Sanz Roldán. He retired from this top role on January 2, 2012. General Admiral Fernando García Sánchez then took his place.

Early Life and Military Training
José Julio Rodríguez Fernández was born in Ourense, Spain, on June 8, 1948. He joined the military in 1969. He started his career as a fighter pilot. He also flew transport planes.
He studied management and completed special training for Air Staff. He trained in Spain, the United States, and Britain. This training helped him become a skilled leader.
Rising Through the Ranks
His first assignment was at the 21 Wing base in Morón de la Frontera. After becoming a captain, he moved to the 11 Wing at Manises. From 1982, he worked in logistics, helping to manage supplies.
He also worked on the European fighter jet project, the Eurofighter Typhoon, in Munich. He became the Head of Logistic Command. This happened after he spent three years with the F-18 Wing 31 in Zaragoza.
In 2000, he was promoted to brigadier general. He became the Head of Planning Division of Staff. He also led a project for refueling planes for NATO. Later, as a major general, he managed telecommunications and information systems. He also became the Director General of Armament and Equipment for the Spanish Ministry of Defence.
On December 31, 2011, he moved to the reserve. This was before his full retirement.
Leading the Spanish Armed Forces
As the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Rodríguez Fernández was in charge of all of Spain's military forces. This included the army, navy, and air force. It is a very important job, making sure the country is safe.
After leaving the military, he continued to serve his country. From 2020 to 2021, he worked as the chief of staff. He assisted the Second Deputy Prime Minister, Pablo Iglesias.
