José María Jover Zamora (born in Cartagena, Spain, on June 5, 1920 – died in Madrid on November 14, 2006) was a very important Spanish historian. He helped shape how we study history in Spain today.

A Leading Spanish Historian

José María Jover Zamora was a key person in modern Spanish history. He greatly influenced how historians in Spain studied the past. He made history more interesting and accurate for everyone.

Teaching History at Universities

In 1949, Jover became a professor at the University of Valencia. He taught about the "Universal History of the Modern Age" and "General Cultural History." Later, he moved to the Complutense University of Madrid. There, he continued to share his knowledge with many students.

New Ways to Study History

In the mid-1960s, Jover became interested in new ideas about history from Europe. He was especially inspired by the Annales School, a group of French historians who looked at long-term changes and everyday life. He also learned a lot from the Spanish historian Jaume Vicens Vives. These new ideas helped him teach history in a fresh and exciting way.

His Famous Students

Many of Jover's students became famous historians themselves. Some of them include Javier Tusell, Elena Hernández Sandoica, Juan Pablo Fusi, and Ángel Bahamonde. They carried on his work and ideas.

Leading a Big History Project

In 1975, José María Jover took charge of a huge project called Historia de España (History of Spain). This project was started by another famous historian, Ramón Menéndez Pidal, who passed away before finishing it. Jover reorganized the plan and added many new parts to make it even better.
