A Military Career Begins
José Solchaga was a professional officer in the Spanish Army. He came from the region of Navarre in northern Spain. In 1936, he joined a movement that tried to take control from the existing government, known as the Republican government. This event led to the start of the Spanish Civil War.
Leading Troops in the North
General Solchaga played an important role in the early parts of the war. He led troops from Navarre in several campaigns in northern Spain.
Capturing Key Areas
In August 1936, his forces took control of Irún. This was a very important victory because it cut off the northern Republican areas from the French border. It also helped them capture San Sebastián a month later.
Campaigns in the North
After these victories, Solchaga was promoted to General. He then led Nationalist troops in other major battles in the north:
- The Biscay Campaign
- The Battle of Santander
- The campaign against Asturias
These campaigns were important for the Nationalists to gain control of the northern parts of Spain.
Later War Efforts
As the war continued, General Solchaga led his troops in other significant operations across Spain.
Battles Across Spain
In March 1938, he commanded the Navarrese divisions during the Aragon Offensive. This was a large attack in eastern Spain. Later that year, in June 1938, he led the Turia Army Corps in the XYZ Line battle.
Final Campaigns
Towards the end of the war, General Solchaga continued to lead important forces. In December 1938, he commanded the Navarrese Army Corps during the Catalonia Offensive. This was a major push into the region of Catalonia. Finally, in March 1939, he was part of the final offensive that ended the war.
