His Early Life
Joxantonio Ormazabal was born in 1948 in Zegama, a town in the Basque Country of Spain. When he was 12, he joined a special school called a seminary. He later studied at another seminary in San Sebastián.
He eventually left the seminary to become a teacher. In an interview, he once said that he didn't grow up reading many stories. Instead, his mother would tell him tales, and he remembered characters like Peru and María.
His Career as a Writer
At 23, Ormazabal started teaching at a private school in Zarautz. There, he worked alongside other famous authors like Mariasun Landa. His very first book was published using his pen name, "Joxean."
While teaching, Ormazabal also wrote the words for songs by Imanol Urbieta. Some of these songs include Astoa ikusi nuen and Tximeleta mendian.
Later, Ormazabal became an editor at Elkarlanean Publishing House in 1981. This is where he really focused on books for children and young people. He helped create many literary collections and textbooks. He also published his own first work there, called Fernando Smezketarra.
Besides writing, Ormazabal was in charge of the children's and youth departments at Elkar Publishing House until 2009. He continued to work on children's literature, often editing and translating important books.
What He Wrote About
Ormazabal's stories often featured humor and fantasy. He also wrote about important topics in his books. For example, he explored ideas like freedom in Kaiolatik Mendira (1986). He also wrote about poverty and fairness in Kittano (1995).
His books also touched on the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren, like in Aitona parapentean (2004). He even wrote about caring for the environment in Txoria zezenaren adar gainean (1999).
Poetry was also a big part of Ormazabal's work. His poem Ilunorduak eta Argilaurdenak (2007) was even a finalist for a major literary prize in 2008.
Some of his well-known titles include Zirkua amets (2009), Kaskarintxo (1983), Margolin (1983), and Kittano.
