Joy is a small village located in Mercer County, Illinois, in the United States. In 2020, about 372 people lived there. It's a quiet place in the western part of Mercer County.
History of Joy
The village of Joy was started in 1869. It was named after J. F. Joy, who was the president of a big train company called the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.
Where is Joy Located?
Joy is in western Mercer County. A main road, Illinois Route 17, goes right through the village on Center Street. This road leads east about 7 miles (11 km) to Aledo, which is the main town of the county. If you go west on the same road for about 7 miles, you'll reach New Boston, which is on the Mississippi River.
The village covers an area of about 0.43 square miles (1.11 square kilometers), and all of it is land. Water from the village flows into different rivers. Some water goes east to a stream that flows into the Edwards River, which then flows into the Mississippi River. Other water goes west to the Mud River, which is part of the Pope Creek area, also flowing into the Mississippi.
