Joyce Howard was a talented English actress, writer, and film executive. She was born in London, England, on February 28, 1922. Joyce passed away on November 23, 2010, in Santa Monica, California.
Joyce Howard's Acting Career
Joyce Howard studied acting at RADA, a famous drama school. A film director named Anthony Asquith saw her in a play. He was impressed and gave the 19-year-old a role in the movie Freedom Radio (1941).
After that, Joyce starred in many films. She acted alongside James Mason in movies like The Night Has Eyes. Her acting in that film received great reviews.
Joyce also performed a lot in the theatre. She was in plays such as Romeo and Juliet at the Old Vic. She also appeared in A Streetcar Named Desire. She kept acting in London even during World War II, when the city was being bombed.
Life as a Writer and Executive
In 1950, after making 13 films, Joyce mostly stopped acting. She wanted to focus on raising her three children. Her children were from her first marriage to actor Basil Sydney.
Joyce then started a new career as a writer. She wrote three popular novels: Two Persons Singular (1960), A Private View (1961), and Going On (2000). She also wrote plays, including Broken Silence, which was shown by the BBC.
After her divorce from Basil Sydney, Joyce married Joel Shor. He was an American psychoanalyst. In 1964, she moved to California with him.
Even though Joyce and Joel later separated, she stayed in California. To support her family, she began a third career. She became a story analyst for TV networks. This meant she would read stories and scripts to decide if they would make good shows.
Joyce was promoted to an executive role at Paramount Pictures and Paramount TV. She became responsible for finding new stories and developing them into movies or TV shows.
She also continued to write for television. She wrote ideas for miniseries like The Whiteoaks. Later, the widow of writer Henry Miller asked Joyce for help. Joyce collected and edited letters written by Henry Miller. She also wrote the introduction for the book Letters by Henry Miller to Hoki Tokuda Miller (1986).
