Anthony William Landon Asquith (born 9 November 1902 – died 20 February 1968) was a famous English film director. He worked with playwright Terence Rattigan on successful movies like The Winslow Boy (1948) and The Browning Version (1951). Some of his other well-known films include Pygmalion (1938), French Without Tears (1940), The Way to the Stars (1945), and a 1952 movie based on Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest.

Early Life and Education

Anthony Asquith was born in London, England. His father was H. H. Asquith, who served as the Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916. His mother was Margot Asquith, who gave him the family nickname 'Puffin'. Anthony went to school at Eaton House, Winchester College, and Balliol College, Oxford.

Starting in Film

When Anthony was young, the film industry was not always seen as a serious career. However, he was very interested in movies. He began his career in the late 1920s by directing four silent films. His last silent film, A Cottage on Dartmoor, helped him become known for his careful and often emotional way of composing scenes. He later directed Pygmalion (1938), which was based on a play by George Bernard Shaw. This movie starred Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller.

Famous Films and Collaborations

Anthony Asquith was a close friend and frequent collaborator with playwright Terence Rattigan. They worked together on ten films! He also often worked with producer Anatole de Grunwald. His later films included Rattigan's The Winslow Boy (1948) and The Browning Version (1951). He also directed the 1952 movie version of Oscar Wilde's famous play The Importance of Being Earnest.

Anthony Asquith passed away in 1968. He was buried at All Saints Churchyard in Sutton Courtenay, Berkshire, England.
