Jozef Lenárt (born April 3, 1923 – died February 11, 2004) was an important Slovak politician. He served as the prime minister of Czechoslovakia from 1963 to 1968.
Life and Career
Jozef Lenárt was born in a town called Liptovská Porúbka in what is now Slovakia. He studied chemistry in high school. After finishing school, he worked for the famous Baťa shoe company.
He later joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (known as KSČ). He also became a member of the Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS). These were the main political parties at that time.
Lenárt was a member of the country's main parliament for a long time, from 1960 to 1990. He also held a high position as the Speaker of the Slovak National Council from 1962 to 1963. This role is similar to leading a regional parliament.
His most important job was serving as the Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia. He held this position between 1963 and 1968.
Even though he was ethnically Slovak, he became a citizen of the Czech Republic. This happened after Czechoslovakia split into two separate countries in 1993.
Jozef Lenárt was known for staying in leadership roles for a very long time. He held various important positions for over 25 years. This was quite impressive because he managed to keep his career going through many changes in government and policy.
He passed away in Prague in 2004.

- From 1958 to about 1990: He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ).
- From 1962 to 1963: He was the Chairman of the Slovak National Council.
- From 1963 to 1968: He served as the Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia.
- From 1968 to 1970: He was a secretary for the Central Committee of the KSČ.
- From 1970 to 1987: He became the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the KSS.
- From 1970 to about 1990: He was a member of the Presidium of the KSČ, which was a very high-level group.
- From 1971 to about 1990: He was the Chairman of the Central Committee of the National Front of the Slovak Socialist Republic. He was also the Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee of the National Front of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.
