João Castelo Ribeiro Gonçalves (born October 19, 1937 – died December 11, 2016) was an important Brazilian politician and lawyer. He served as the Governor of Maranhão, a state in Brazil, from 1979 to 1982. He also held other important jobs, like being a federal deputy and the Mayor of São Luís, the capital city of Maranhão.
About João Castelo's Life
João Castelo was the son of Tales of Amarante Ribeiro Gonçalves and Maria Antonieta Cruz Ribeiro Gonçalves. Before becoming a politician, he worked at a bank called Banco da Amazônia starting in 1956. He even became a director there.
He also worked for the government in different roles. He was the State Treasurer of Maranhão. He helped with important groups that dealt with data and banking rules for the country. When he was governor, he was part of councils that helped develop the Amazon and Northeast regions of Brazil.
In 1984, he earned a law degree from the Unified School of Brasília. He also received a special title called "Doctor Honoris Causa" from the Federal University of Maranhão.
João Castelo's Political Journey
João Castelo started his political career with the National Renewal Alliance party. He was elected as a federal deputy in 1970 and again in 1974. A federal deputy is like a representative who helps make laws for the country.
In 1978, he was chosen to be the governor of Maranhão. This was done through a special election system at the time. After some changes in the political system, he joined the Democratic Social Party. With this new party, he was elected as a senator in 1982. A senator is another type of representative who helps make laws, but at a national level.
In 1989, he joined the National Reconstruction Party. He supported Fernando Collor de Mello, who successfully became president. João Castelo tried to become governor of Maranhão again in 1990 but lost in the second round of voting.
Over the years, he joined different political parties. He ran for senator in 1994 and for mayor of São Luís in 1996, but he was not elected. Later, he joined the Brazilian Social Democracy Party. He ran for mayor of São Luís several more times (in 2000, 2004, and 2012) and for senator in 2006, but he did not win these elections.
However, he was elected as a federal deputy three more times: in 1998, 2002, and 2014. He also successfully became the mayor of São Luís in 2008. As mayor, he was in charge of running the city.
In 2016, as a federal deputy, he voted in favor of starting the impeachment process for Dilma Rousseff, who was the president of Brazil at the time.
His Passing
João Castelo passed away on December 11, 2016, at the age of 79. He died due to complications after having surgery.
