João Pedro Furtado da Cunha Semedo (born June 20, 1951 – died July 17, 2018) was an important person in Portugal. He was a doctor and a politician. He worked to help people both in hospitals and in the government.

Who Was João Semedo?

João Semedo was known for his work as a lung doctor, also called a pulmonologist. He also spent many years as a politician. He was a member of the Portuguese Parliament, which is called the Assembly of the Republic. He also helped lead a political party called the Left Bloc.

Early Life and Education

João Semedo was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1951. He went to Camões Secondary School when he was younger. Later, he studied medicine at the University of Lisbon. He finished his medical degree in 1975. While at university, he was part of the student association board.

After finishing medical school, he helped start a group called Movement ALFA. This group worked to teach adults how to read and write. He also completed his training at the Civil Hospitals of Lisbon.

A Doctor's Journey

In 1978, João Semedo moved to Oporto, another big city in Portugal. There, he continued to work as a doctor. He also became very active in social and cultural groups. He helped create the Union of Doctors of the North. This was a group for doctors in the northern part of Portugal. He also helped with the Popular University of Porto.

In the 1990s, he started his own private clinic. He also managed the medical services for a social welfare group. From 2000 to 2006, he was in charge of the Joaquim Urbano Hospital. This hospital specialized in lung and infectious diseases. He left this job in 2006 to focus on being a full-time member of Parliament.

Joining the Political World

João Semedo became involved in politics early in his life. In 1972, he joined the Union of Communist Students. This led him to join the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). In 1973, he was arrested by the secret police of the government at that time. This government was called the Estado Novo dictatorial regime. He was accused of trying to change the government.

He served on important committees within the Communist Party. However, he left the party's main committee in 1991. He then left the party completely in 2000. In 2003, he helped start a new group called the Communist Renewal Movement.

A Voice in Parliament

In 2004, João Semedo joined the Left Bloc as an independent member. He ran for a seat in the European Parliament. In 2005, he ran for the Assembly of the Republic, which is Portugal's main parliament. He was elected and served as a national deputy from 2006 to 2015. He was elected again in 2009 and 2011.

He had to leave his last term in Parliament early because of illness. He also ran for mayor in different cities, like Gondomar, Gaia, and Lisbon, but he was never elected.

Later Life and Legacy

João Semedo passed away on July 17, 2018. He is remembered for his dedication to medicine and his long career in politics. He worked to improve healthcare and represent people in Portugal.
