Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Juan Antolínez de Burgos (1561–1644) was a Spanish historian and writer. He is best known for writing a book called Historia de Valladolid. This book tells the history of the city of Valladolid in Spain.

Antolínez de Burgos was born in 1561. This was the same year a big fire happened in Valladolid. Not much is known about his early life. He went to the University of Valladolid and became a lawyer. He worked as a lawyer in the city's main court, called the Royal Chancery. In 1613, he became an alderman, which is like a city council member. He started this job in 1616.

His Main Work: A History of Valladolid

Juan Antolínez de Burgos finished his book, A History of Valladolid, in 1644. He was 83 years old at the time. The original handwritten copy of his book is kept safe in the National Library of Spain in Madrid.

Later, in 1759, another person named Ventura Pérez added more information to Antolínez's work. Pérez also included many drawings of interesting buildings in Valladolid. These drawings have been very helpful for people who study art and history today.

What His Book Is About

Antolínez de Burgos's book describes many important places in Valladolid. He wrote about churches, convents, and chapels. He also included details about tombs, old writings, and family symbols (coats of arms).

His book shares many stories about these places. It includes facts and events that happened there. He even wrote down interesting anecdotes, ghost stories, miracles, and legends. The book also talks about important people and their reasons for doing things.

For example, he wrote a lot about the Church of Santa Maria Magdalena. This church was partly rebuilt by Petro de la Gasca. Gasca was famous for winning a rebellion in Peru. He is also buried in that church. Antolínez's book also explores the Church of Saint Mary the Ancient and the large Convent of San Francisco.

While the book focuses on religious buildings, it sometimes mentions palaces. These include the homes of important people like the Admirals of Castile and other famous families.

Later Editions of His Book

In the 1800s, Antolínez's book was edited and published with notes. This made it easier for more people to read. A more modern version was also published in 1989.
