Juan Bautista Vázquez the Younger facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Juan Bautista Vázquez the Younger was a Spanish sculptor who lived in the late 1500s and early 1600s. He was the son of another famous sculptor, Juan Bautista Vázquez the Elder. Both father and son were part of the important group of artists known as the Sevillian school of sculpture.

His Life and Art

Vázquez the Younger followed in his father's footsteps, learning his skills in his father's art studio. He also worked with other sculptors, including Jerónimo Hernández. Sometimes, he worked as an oficial, which meant he was trusted to manage projects when the main artist was not there.

He created art in Seville between 1578 and 1600. He married Lucía de Chaves in 1579. His art style was similar to his father's, but it also fit in with the popular art style of his time called mannerism. His father's work was known for being calm and classical, like the Renaissance style. Vázquez the Younger's art showed a change towards the Baroque style, which was more dramatic.

Important Works

Vázquez the Younger often worked with other artists on big projects.

Altarpiece in Arcos de la Frontera

In 1585, he worked with Jerónimo Hernández on a large altarpiece for a church in Arcos de la Frontera. An altarpiece is a work of art placed behind the altar in a church. He was in charge of one side of this altarpiece. Later, he passed some of the work to other artists. Experts believe he carved the figures of Saint Luke and Mark on the altarpiece.

Work for the Jesuits

Around 1585, he also worked for the Jesuits in Seville. He is believed to have created parts of the altarpiece of the Immaculate Conception in the Church of the Annunciation. This altarpiece includes small figures of saints like Saint Francis, Saint Roch, and Saint Sebastian. The Saint Sebastian figure shows the style he learned from his father. He is also thought to have made small figures of Saint Ann and the Virgin and Child.

Other Attributed Works

The Virgin and Child statue in the church of Beas, in the province of Huelva, is believed to be his work.

Some people also think he created figures like Saint John the Apostle, Saint John the Evangelist, and Christ at the Column for the altarpiece at the Monastery of Saint Jerome in Granada. However, some art experts believe these might have been made by another artist named Melchor de Turín, who was also influenced by Vázquez the Younger's father.

Because he often worked with others and his style was similar to his father's, it can be hard for experts to be sure which works were made only by him.
