A still life painting of jewelry from 1624 by Juan Bautista de Espinosa.

Juan Bautista de Espinosa (born 1590, died 1641) was a talented Spanish painter. He lived and worked during a time when art was changing a lot. Even though he created many different types of paintings, like religious scenes and portraits, most of them are now lost. Today, we only know him for a few of his amazing still life paintings.

Who Was Juan Bautista de Espinosa?

Not a lot is known about Juan Bautista de Espinosa's life. We know he was active as a painter between 1612 and 1626. During these years, he worked in two important Spanish cities: Toledo and Madrid.

His Artistic Training

Experts believe that Espinosa probably learned his painting skills in Holland. This is because his painting style shows influences from Dutch art. His work is seen as a bridge between two major art styles: the Flemish Baroque style and the Spanish Baroque style. He helped bring new ideas from northern Europe into Spanish art.

His Known Works

Most of Espinosa's paintings that we know of today are still life artworks. A still life painting shows objects that don't move, like fruit, flowers, or household items. The painting shown here, "Still Life Of Jewelry," is a great example of his work.

Besides his still life paintings, some other artworks are thought to be his. These include several large wall paintings, called murals, found in churches across Spain. One famous mural attributed to him is in a town called Alcaudete.

Juan Bautista de Espinosa passed away in Madrid in 1641. Even though much of his work is gone, the few paintings we have show he was an important artist in his time.
