Juan Gabriel Cotino Ferrer (born January 26, 1950 – died April 13, 2020) was a Spanish politician and businessman. He held several important roles in the government of the Valencian Community in Spain.

Early Life and First Steps in Politics
Juan Cotino was born in Xirivella, a town near Valencia, Spain. His family worked in farming. He helped start the Valencian Association of Farmers, which supported local farmers.
In 1976, he joined a political party called UCD. Later, he became part of the Popular Party. In 1991, he was elected to the City Council of Valencia. He became a deputy mayor and was re-elected in 1995.
Important Political Roles
In 1996, Juan Cotino became the General Director of the Police. This was a very important job where he helped manage the police force. He held this position until 2002.
After that, he became the Government Delegate in the Valencian Community. This role meant he represented the national government in the region.
In 2004, after his party lost the national elections, he took on new roles in the regional government of the Generalidad Valenciana. He became an advisor for Agriculture, Fishing, and Food.
In 2007, he was named the third vice-president of the Valencian Community. He also became a counselor for Social Welfare. In 2009, his role changed to counselor for Environment, while still being vice-president.
After the elections in May 2011, he was chosen to be the President of the Corts Valencianes. This is the main parliament of the Valencian Community.
Challenges and Changes in His Career
During his time in politics, there were questions about how some companies were chosen to help organize a big event. This event was the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Valencia in 2006. Investigations looked into how these contracts were handled.
Because of these investigations, Juan Cotino decided to leave politics. He stepped down from all his positions on October 13, 2014. Mr. Cotino always said he was not involved in the decisions about these contracts.
Personal Life and Passing
Juan Cotino was a member of Opus Dei, a Catholic organization.
In March 2020, he became sick and was admitted to a hospital in Manises. He had tested positive for coronavirus during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. Juan Cotino passed away on April 13, 2020, at the age of 70, due to complications from COVID-19.
