Juan Crisóstomo Torrico Vargas was born on January 21, 1808, in Lima, Peru. He passed away in Paris, France, on March 27, 1875. Torrico became the 16th President of Peru for a short time in 1842. He was only 34 years old, making him the youngest president Peru ever had.

Early Life and Military Career
Juan Crisóstomo Torrico joined the army in 1820. He fought alongside famous leaders like José de San Martín. Later, he joined the forces of Agustín Gamarra. Torrico participated in important campaigns against the Peru-Bolivian Confederation. Sadly, the Peruvian forces were defeated in 1841. Gamarra, his leader, died in the Battle of Ingavi on November 18, 1841.
Becoming President of Peru
After Gamarra's death, Manuel Menéndez became the president of Peru. However, Torrico quickly took action. He led a successful coup d'état against Menéndez. A coup d'état is when someone takes control of the government by force. So, Torrico became president.
His time as president was very short. Peru was going through many civil wars at that time. Because of this, Torrico was removed from power in the same year. Juan Francisco de Vidal took his place.
Life After the Presidency
After losing the presidency, Torrico went to Bolivia for safety. While there, he planned against Vidal. Later, he also worked against Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco.
Torrico finally returned to Peru in 1844. This was after Vivanco's government fell. He then took on important roles in the government. In 1851, he became the Minister of Finance during Ramón Castilla's time as president. Later, he served as Peru's ambassador to France. This was under President Juan Antonio Pezet.
Juan Crisóstomo Torrico passed away in Paris on March 27, 1875.
