Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco Iturralde (born June 15, 1806 – died September 16, 1873) was an important Peruvian political and military leader. He served as the President of Peru for a short time, from 1843 to 1844. He was born in Lima, Peru, which is the capital city of Peru.

Vivanco played a role in Peru's history during a time when the country was facing many changes. He helped lead Peruvian forces in a fight against the idea of Peru and Bolivia joining together.

Early Life and Military Career

Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco was born in Lima, Peru, in 1806. From a young age, he was involved in military and political life. He became known for his leadership skills and his strong opinions about how Peru should be governed.

Vivanco's Role in Arequipa

During the time when Agustín Gamarra was president for his second term, Vivanco was given an important job. He was made the prefect of Arequipa, a major city in southern Peru. This role meant he was in charge of the region's government and military.

Becoming President of Peru

In 1843, Vivanco led a rebellion against the government of Juan Francisco de Vidal. However, his rebellion was not successful at first, and he had to leave Peru and go to Bolivia.

The "Supreme Director"

After some time, Vivanco returned to Peru. He managed to gain enough support to become president in 1843. He took on the special title of "Supreme Director of the Republic." This title showed that he had a lot of power and wanted to lead Peru in a new direction. His time as president lasted until 1844.

Later Political Life

After his presidency, Vivanco continued to be involved in Peruvian politics. He held several important positions and played a part in significant events.

The Vivanco–Pareja Treaty

In 1865, Vivanco signed an important agreement called the Vivanco–Pareja Treaty. He signed this treaty on behalf of President Juan Antonio Pezet. This treaty was one of the main reasons for a conflict known as the Chincha Islands War. This war was fought over valuable guano deposits (bird droppings used as fertilizer) on the Chincha Islands.

Serving as Prime Minister

From April to September 1865, Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco also served as the Prime Minister of Peru. This was another very important role in the government. He also worked as Peru's representative, or ambassador, in Chile.

Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco passed away on September 16, 1873, in Valparaíso, Chile.
