Juan Jiménez Martín was a Spanish painter. He was born in Ávila, Spain, on May 27, 1858. He passed away in Madrid in 1901. Juan was known for painting historical scenes. Sometimes his birth year is listed as 1855. Also, his last name is sometimes spelled "Giménez".

Early Life and Training

Juan studied art in Madrid, Spain. He attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. There, he learned from famous teachers like Federico de Madrazo, Carlos Luis de Ribera, and Carlos de Haes.

Studying Abroad

In 1881, Juan received money to study outside of Spain. This special funding came from the local government of Ávila. He moved to Rome, Italy. In Rome, he got a scholarship to the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts. He studied there from 1882 to 1886.

While in Rome, Juan was inspired by the artist Mariano Fortuny. He started painting "Orientalist" art. This style showed scenes and people from places like the Middle East and North Africa. During his time in Italy, he also visited cities like Florence, Naples, and Venice. In these cities, he mostly painted landscapes.

Returning to Spain

After his studies, Juan returned to Ávila. He gave the local government a portrait he painted. It was a picture of "Doña Ximena Blázquez [es]". She was a brave heroine from the Reconquista. The Reconquista was a long period in history when Christian kingdoms took back land from Muslim rule in Spain.

Art Exhibitions and Awards

Juan Jiménez Martín often showed his paintings at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He started exhibiting in 1876. His first painting shown was a still-life. He continued to exhibit his work until the year he died.

In 1901, he won a third-class medal. This award was for his painting of the inside of Ávila Cathedral. One of his famous paintings is "A Roman Lady at her Dressing Table". He showed this painting in 1895. Since 1904, it has been displayed in the Congress of Deputies in Spain.
