Juan José Campanella (born on July 19, 1959) is a famous filmmaker from Argentina. He directs movies and TV shows, and also writes and produces them. He became known around the world for his movie The Secret in Their Eyes (2009). This film won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, which is a very big honor!

Early Life and First Steps in Film

Juan José Campanella was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He first started studying engineering at university. However, after four years, he decided to leave in 1980. He said that watching the movie All That Jazz made him realize he wanted to make films instead.

His very first movie as a director was a short film called Prioridad nacional in 1979. After this, Campanella moved to the United States. He studied filmmaking at the Tisch School of the Arts. In 1984, he made his second film, Victoria 392. This movie was the first time he worked with his actor friend Eduardo Blanco. They worked together on five films! He also started working with screenwriter Fernando Castets on this film.

Amazing Career in Film and TV

In 1999, Campanella worked with Fernando Castets again. They wrote El Mismo Amor, la Misma Lluvia. This movie starred his actor friends Ricardo Darín and Eduardo Blanco. This team worked together on two more films: El Hijo de la Novia in 2001 and Luna de Avellaneda in 2004. El Hijo de la Novia was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film!

Ricardo Darín also starred in Campanella's mystery film The Secret in Their Eyes (2009). This movie was a huge success! It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010. This is one of the highest awards a foreign film can receive.

Besides movies, Juan José Campanella has directed many episodes of popular American TV shows. Some of these include House, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, 30 Rock, Halt and Catch Fire, and Colony.

He has worked with many talented actors. He worked five times with Eduardo Blanco and four times with Ricardo Darín. He also directed famous actors like Hugh Laurie (from House) and Tina Fey (from 30 Rock).

Personal Life

Juan José Campanella has a Master's degree in Fine Arts from New York University. He is also studying for another Master's degree in Political Science. Since 2006, he has also been a citizen of Spain.
