Juan Marín's Life Story
Early Life and Business Beginnings
Juan Marín was born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a city in the Province of Cádiz, Spain. He started studying Labour Relations, which is about how people work together in companies. However, in 1981, he decided to stop his studies. He chose to work in his family's jewellery business instead. He also became a leader for the Business Association in his hometown.
Starting in Local Politics
Marín served as a town councillor in Sanlúcar de Barrameda from 2007 to 2015. A town councillor is someone elected to help run the local government of a city or town. Before joining the Citizens party, he was part of several other political groups. These included the People's Alliance (AP) and the Andalusian Party (PA). He also led a local group called Independent Citizens of Sanlúcar (CIS).
In 2006, Marín created the CIS group because of a local issue with trash collection. In the 2007 Spanish local elections, his group won three seats on the city council. They then formed a government with the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This alliance helped them break the majority held by another party. Marín became the deputy mayor, which is like a second-in-command to the mayor. This successful partnership continued after the 2011 Spanish local elections. In the same year, he decided to connect his local CIS group with the national Citizens party, led by Albert Rivera.
Moving to Regional Politics
In 2015, Juan Marín was chosen to be the main candidate for the Citizens party in the 2015 Andalusian regional election. This election was to choose leaders for the government of the region of Andalusia. Running in Seville, he led his party to win nine seats in the Parliament of Andalusia. This was the first time the Citizens party entered the regional parliament.
At first, Marín did not want to support the leader of the PSOE, Susana Díaz, to become the regional president. He also didn't want to join her government. However, after some discussions, they reached an agreement. In June, Marín's party agreed to support her in a special vote.
In the 2018 Andalusian regional election, the Citizens party grew stronger. They won 21 seats and became the third-largest party. They then formed a government with the People's Party (PP). Another party called Vox also supported this new government. The leader of the PP, Juanma Moreno, became the president of Andalusia. Juan Marín became the Vice President in Moreno's government. He also took on the role of Minister for Tourism, Regeneration, Justice, and Local Administration. A minister is a high-ranking official in the government who is in charge of a specific area.
Marín led his party again in the 2022 Andalusian regional election. However, this election was very difficult for the Citizens party. They lost all their seats in the parliament. On a radio show called Onda Cero, Marín became emotional after the results. He said that his children could now have their father back, meaning he would have more time for his family.
Hobbies and Interests
Juan Marín has a long history of being involved in volleyball. He has been a coach for volleyball teams. He was also a member of the referees' association for the sport. Additionally, he was part of the main organization that manages volleyball in Andalusia.
