Juan Subercaseaux Errázuriz was an important Chilean Roman Catholic archbishop. He was born on August 26, 1896, and passed away on August 9, 1942. His family had roots in France and the Basque region.

Life and Education

Juan Subercaseaux was born in Santiago, the capital city of Chile. His father, Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña, was a diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. Ramón was Chile's Ambassador to the Holy See for over twenty years. The Holy See is the government of the Catholic Church.

His mother, Amalia Errázuriz Urmeneta, was a writer. She wrote a book called "Rome of the Spirit." Juan grew up in a very Catholic family. He learned about faith from a young age. His spiritual guide was a famous Chilean priest named Miguel León Prado. Miguel León Prado later became the first bishop of the Diocese of Linares.

Juan went to a well-known Jesuit school in Santiago called "San Ignacio." After finishing school, he went straight to the Santiago Seminar. A seminar is a special school where people study to become priests.

Further Studies and Ordination

After becoming a priest, Juan continued his studies in Rome, Italy. He studied Philosophy and Theology. Philosophy is the study of knowledge and existence. Theology is the study of religious faith and God.

He studied at important universities like the Pontificia Università Gregoriana. He also attended the Pontificio Collegio Pio Latino Americano. Later, he went to the Accademia dei Nobili Ecclesiastici. This academy is now called the Pontificia Accademia Ecclesiastica. There, he earned a doctorate degree in Philosophy and Theology. A doctorate is the highest university degree.

Juan Subercaseaux was ordained as a Priest for Santiago de Chile on April 3, 1920. This means he officially became a priest.

Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop

On February 23, 1935, Juan Subercaseaux was appointed as the Bishop of Linares, Chile. He was consecrated as a Bishop on April 28, 1935. This ceremony was led by Archbishop Ettore Felici, who was the Apostolic Nuncio in Chile. A Nuncio is like an ambassador for the Pope.

He was officially installed as Bishop of Linares on May 12, 1935. This means he took on his new role.

On January 8, 1940, he was appointed to an even higher position. He became the Archbishop of La Serena, Chile. He was installed as Archbishop on April 9, 1940.

Juan Subercaseaux Errázuriz was awarded the Order of the Crown from Italy. He passed away on August 9, 1942, in a road accident near La Serena.
