Early Life and Family Background
Juan de Galavís was born on January 29, 1683, in a town called Robledillo de Gata in Extremadura, Spain. His parents were Juan Pérez Galavís and Catalina Mendez.
He had a brother named Pedro Galavís y Mendez. Pedro later became the Mayor of Bogotá. Juan's nephew, Pedro's son, Eustaquio Galavís y Hurtado, also served as Mayor of Bogotá two times in the 1780s and 1790s.
His Journey to Priesthood
Galavís studied in Ávila, Spain. In 1723, he became a priest in the Premonstratensians order, also known as the Norbertines. He was a type of priest called a canon regular.
From 1720 to 1723, he was elected as the abbot of Espíritu Santo. An abbot is the head of a monastery. After that, from 1723 to 1726, he was the Superior General for all the Spanish Premonstratensians.
From 1726 to 1729, he held two important jobs at the same time. He was the head of Colegio San Norberto in Salamanca, and he was also a professor. He taught theology (the study of religious faith) and Scripture at the famous University of Salamanca.
Becoming an Archbishop
Archbishop of Santo Domingo
On September 17, 1729, King Philip V of Spain chose Juan de Galavís to be the next Archbishop of Santo Domingo. This was in what is now the Dominican Republic. The previous archbishop had passed away.
His selection was officially confirmed by Pope Benedict XIII on November 28, 1729. He became an archbishop in April 1731. This special ceremony, called an episcopal consecration, took place in Spain. The person who consecrated him was Sebastián Lorenzo Pizarro, who was the Bishop of Puerto Rico. He served as archbishop there until 1738.
Archbishop of Santafé
On December 17, 1737, Galavís was chosen again to be an archbishop. This time, he was selected to be the Archbishop of Santafé en Nueva Granada. Today, this is known as the Archdiocese of Bogotá in Colombia. This happened after the death of the previous archbishop.
Pope Clement XII confirmed his selection on March 3, 1738. He finally arrived in Bogotá on July 29, 1739, to start his new role. Sadly, he passed away in Bogotá just a few months later, on November 14, 1739, at the age of 56.
