Juan de Zúñiga y Requesens was an important Spanish nobleman and official. He served as the Viceroy of Naples from 1579 to 1582. Juan de Zúñiga y Requesens was a key figure in Spanish politics and military efforts during the 16th century.

He was the sixth child of Juan de Zúñiga Avellaneda y Velasco. His father was a tutor to Philip II of Spain, who later became King of Spain. His mother was Estefanía de Requesens y Rois de Liori. Juan also had an older brother named Luis de Requesens y Zúñiga.

Early Life and Diplomacy

Juan de Zúñiga y Requesens began his career in important diplomatic roles. He worked as an ambassador in Rome. He did this alongside his older brother, Luis. This early experience helped him learn about international relations.

He later became a governor in different regions. He governed the Duchy of Milan in Italy. He also governed the 17 provinces of Flanders. These were important areas for the Spanish Empire.

Fighting the Ottoman Empire

Juan de Zúñiga y Requesens played a part in major military events. His naval forces helped fight against the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans were a powerful empire that controlled much of southeastern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

He was involved in talks with Pius V, who was the Pope at the time. These discussions aimed to create the Holy League. This was a group of Christian states that joined together. Their goal was to stop piracy and the Ottoman invasion led by Suleiman I.

These efforts led to the famous Battle of Lepanto in 1571. This battle was a major naval victory for the Holy League. After the battle, Spanish forces bombed the remaining Ottoman ships. This happened in places like Alger and Tripoli. They also raided coastal areas in Anatolia. These actions helped stop the Ottoman invasion of Western and Southern Europe.

Family and Later Career

Juan de Zúñiga y Requesens married a noblewoman from Sicily named Giulia Barrese. Through this marriage, he became the Prince of Pietraperzia. Giulia Barrese was the daughter of Girolamo Barrese. Girolamo had been given the title of Marquis of Pietraperzia by Emperor Charles V in 1526.

While serving as Viceroy of Naples, Juan de Zúñiga y Requesens continued to support King Philip II of Spain. He helped gather ships and people to attack Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. King Philip II had a claim to the Portuguese throne because his mother was a Portuguese princess. With the help of some Portuguese nobles, Lisbon was successfully conquered.

Juan de Zúñiga y Requesens remained close to King Philip II. He was promoted to important positions in Spain. He joined the Royal Council of Spain and the Spanish Council of War cabinets. He passed away in 1586.
