Views on Aruba's Future
During his time as Prime Minister, Juancho Evertsz was against a plan for Aruba to become separate. Aruba wanted to be an independent area within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Evertsz believed that if Aruba left the Netherlands Antilles, it would weaken the group of Dutch islands in the Caribbean. Aruba later became separate in 1986, but it stayed part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Disagreement on Independence
Evertsz also had strong disagreements with Dutch Prime Minister Joop den Uyl. The Dutch Labour Party, led by Den Uyl, suggested that the Netherlands Antilles should become fully independent. This meant they would no longer be connected to the Netherlands. Juancho Evertsz strongly opposed this idea.
Later Life
