Juanjuí is a lively town in northern Peru. It is the capital of the Mariscal Cáceres area in the San Martín Region. You can find it on the left bank of the Huallaga River. In 2010, about 54,006 people lived there.

History of Juanjuí

The town of Juanjuí was started by a Spanish captain named José Gaspar López Salcedo. He founded it on September 24, 1827. The name "Juanjuí" comes from "Juan Huido," which means "Juan, the escaped."

How Juanjuí Got Its Name

The first people to settle in Juanjuí were mostly from Lamas. They arrived in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It is said that the first person to come here was an Amerindian man named Juan. He left Lamas because he was treated badly or was being chased by missionaries.

Juan found this area and lived with the people of Chacho Village. After some years, he went back to Lamas. He brought his family and other families with him. They were excited by stories of lots of wildlife in the new land. More people moved here during the time of Peru's independence. The settlement of Chacho Lamas became known as "Juan Huido's land." Over time, "Juan Huido" changed into the name "Juanjuí" for this area.

On July 2, 1940, Juanjuí became the capital city of the new Mariscal Cáceres Province.
