Judi Ann Mason (February 2, 1955 – July 8, 2009) was an American writer, producer, and playwright. She was known for her work on popular TV shows and movies. She also wrote many plays.

Early Life and Education

Judi Ann Mason was born in Bossier City, Louisiana on February 2, 1955. From a young age, she was very good at English. She became interested in writing plays while she was in high school.

Her journey as a professional writer began when she was a drama student. She attended Grambling State University.

A Rising Star in Writing

While studying at Grambling, Judi Ann Mason won a big award. She received the Norman Lear Award for comedy writing. This was for her play called Livin’ Fat. The award came from the Kennedy Center.

The very next year, she won another important award. This was the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award. She won it for her play A Star Ain’t Nothin’ But A Hole In Heaven. The New York Times newspaper praised her work. They said she created "captivating characters" in her plays.

In 1977, Glamour Magazine recognized her talent. They chose her as one of their Top Ten College women. Her friend, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, was also on this list.

Career in Television and Film

Judi Ann Mason started her professional writing career in New York City. She was a member of the NEC (Negro Ensemble Company). She also shared her knowledge with others. For over 20 years, she taught playwriting and screenwriting. She taught at many colleges and universities.

She wrote for many well-known television shows. These include Good Times, Sanford and Son, and A Different World. She also wrote for Beverly Hills, 90210, I'll Fly Away, and American Gothic. Her work also appeared on soap operas like Generations and Guiding Light.

Judi Ann Mason also wrote for movies. One of her film credits is Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. She was also recognized for Sophie And The Moonhanger. This film was nominated for an Emmy Award and a CableACE Award. Her stage plays include The Cornbread Man and Indigo Blues.

Judi Ann Mason had many close friends. These included singer Patti LaBelle and actress LaTonya Richardson. She also knew Jennifer Holliday and Jheryl Busby. She helped Patti LaBelle get her first acting role on TV. This was on the show A Different World.

Judi Ann Mason was a mother. She had a daughter named Mason Synclaire Williams. She also had a son named Austin Barrett Williams.

Sadly, Judi Ann Mason passed away unexpectedly. She died on July 8, 2009.
