Paralympic judo is a special version of the sport of judo for athletes who are visually impaired. It has been a part of the Summer Paralympic Games since 1988. Just like in the Olympic Games, athletes compete in different weight classes.

In the Rio 2016 games, over 130 visually impaired judokas competed. They came from many countries, including the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, and Sweden. This made it the biggest Paralympic judo event ever!

Judo at the Paralympics: A Quick Look

Judo became a Paralympic sport in 1988. At first, there were only 6 events for men. Over the years, the sport grew. By the 2004 Games, there were 13 events, including events for women. The number of events stayed at 13 for many years. For the 2024 Games, there will be 16 events, showing how much the sport has grown!

Many countries have done very well in Paralympic judo. Japan was a strong team in the early years. Later, countries like China, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan have also won many medals.
