Welcome to Jukkasjärvi!

Jukkasjärvi is a unique village that sits at 321 meters (about 1,053 feet) above sea level. It's a popular spot for tourists, especially during the cold winter months. People come from all over the world to experience the special attractions this snowy village has to offer.

What's in a Name?

The name Jukkasjärvi has an interesting history. It comes from the Sami language, where the original name was Čohkkirasjávri. This means "lake of assembly." Long ago, the area by the lake was a busy marketplace for the Sami people, who are the indigenous people of this region.

Later, in the 1600s, Finnish-speaking settlers arrived. They changed the name to Jukkasjärvi, which sounded more like Finnish. Even though the meaning was lost a bit, "järvi" still means "lake" in Finnish, just like "jávri" in Sami. Swedish officials also started using this name.

The Amazing Icehotel

Jukkasjärvi is best known for its incredible Icehotel. This isn't just any hotel; it's literally built from ice and snow every single year! From December to April, visitors can stay in rooms made of ice, sleep on beds of ice, and even have drinks in glasses made of ice.

Each year, artists from all over the world come to Jukkasjärvi to design and sculpt the hotel. They create amazing ice art and unique rooms. When spring arrives, the hotel slowly melts back into the Torne River, from which its ice was harvested. Then, the cycle begins again the next winter!

Jukkasjärvi's Historic Church

The oldest building in Jukkasjärvi is its beautiful wooden church. It was built a very long time ago, around 1607 or 1608. This makes it one of the oldest buildings in the entire region.

The church is famous for its special wooden carved altar piece. This artwork is a triptych, which means it has three panels. It was created by a well-known artist named Bror Hjorth. The Jukkasjärvi Church is also the only remaining example of a "block-pillar church" in Sweden, making it a truly unique historical site.
