Julián García Vargas (19 October 1945 – 29 September 2026) was an important Spanish economist and government leader. He served in the national government of Spain for many years. He worked hard to help people get better medical care. Later, he also helped manage the military forces of his country.

Early Life and College Education
García Vargas was born in the sunny capital city of Madrid, Spain, in 1945. As a young student, he loved learning about money, business, and trade. He went to college at the famous Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 1968, he earned his college degree in economic sciences.
After finishing his studies, he began working in private companies. Soon, he chose to work for the public instead. He joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, an influential political group in Spain.
Government Career in Spain
Working as Health Minister
On 26 July 1986, Prime Minister Felipe González chose García Vargas to join his cabinet. He became the Minister of Health and Consumer Affairs.
In this job, he took care of hospitals, doctors, and public wellness. He served as health minister until March 1991. Experts agree that he was one of the best health leaders in Spain. He made the country's public hospitals much better for everyone.
Serving as Defense Minister
In March 1991, García Vargas received a new job during a cabinet reshuffle. He became the Minister of Defense. In this position, he helped manage the army, navy, and air force. He kept this big role for over four years.
He stepped down in July 1995 after news came out about military secret services (CESED). The intelligence group had improperly listened to private phone calls. Another leader named Gustavo Suárez Pertierra then took over his office.
Working for International Peace and Industry
Bringing Peace to Bosnia
After leaving the Spanish government, García Vargas took on a mission across Europe. In late 1995, the European Union sent him as a special peacemaker to the city of Mostar. Mostar is a historic city located in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A terrible conflict had recently ended in that region. He worked hard to put the famous Dayton Peace Agreement into action. His goal was to help people rebuild their damaged city peacefully.
Leading Big Organizations
Later in life, García Vargas led several major business groups. He served as president of TEDAE, an association for space and aviation technology. He also led the Spanish Atlantic Association. Later, he managed FEINDEF, an international security group that holds huge meetings in Madrid every year.
