Julián García Vargas (born in 1945) is a Spanish economist and politician. He was a member of the Socialist Workers' Party. He served as a minister in the Spanish government.
Early Life and Education
Julián García Vargas was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1945. He studied economics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He earned his degree in 1968.
His Career in Government
Julián García Vargas is an expert in economics and healthcare. He is a member of the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). He started his career in private companies. Later, he worked for the government until 1986.
He became the Minister of Health on July 26, 1986. He was part of the government led by Prime Minister Felipe González. He held this job until March 1991. Many people believe he greatly improved Spain's healthcare system.
In March 1991, he became the Minister of Defense. He kept this role after a government change in July 1993. However, he resigned on July 2, 1995. This happened after news reports said that military secret services were spying on people. Gustavo Suárez Pertierra took over as Defense Minister.
After Government Roles
After leaving his minister position, García Vargas worked for the European Union. From November 1995 to April 1996, he was a special envoy in Mostar, Bosnia. His job was to help carry out the Dayton Peace Agreement. This agreement helped end the war in Bosnia.
He also served as the president of TEDAE. This is the Spanish Association of Defense Technology, Aeronautics and Space Administration. He resigned from this role in June 2013. In 2005, he was the president of the Spanish Atlantic Association.
Julián García Vargas has also been a board member for several companies. In 2021, he was the president of the FEINDEF foundation. This foundation organizes a yearly event in Madrid. It brings together major international arms companies, military leaders, and politicians.
