A Building's Journey Through Time
Early Days and Names
In 1909, the female students at Berkeley started planning this hall. They worked hard to raise money for it between 1909 and 1911. At first, they called the building Girton Hall. This name came from Girton College in England. That college was the first place for women to live and study at the University of Cambridge.
When the building officially opened in 1911, its name changed to Senior Women's Hall. This hall gave women's groups at the university a place to gather. It was an important step towards making things more equal for everyone at the university.
New Uses and Moves
In 1940, the building had to be moved a short distance. This was done to make space for a new street. Later, in 1969, the hall became a child care center for the campus. Its name was changed back to Girton Hall to remember its original history.
The building was recognized as a historic place in 1991. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
A New Home and Name
In 2014, the building needed to move again. This time, it was to make room for a bigger business school. The child care center moved to a different spot. Girton Hall was carefully cut into four pieces! Then, it was moved to the University of California Botanical Garden. There, it was put back together.
When it reopened to the public in 2015, the building received a new name. It was renamed Julia Morgan Hall, honoring the amazing architect who designed it so many years ago.
