A Special Hotel's Story

The Julian Gold Rush Hotel has a long and interesting history. It was started in 1887 by Albert Robinson and Margaret Tull Robinson. They first opened a place called the Robinson Restaurant and Bakery. This business quickly became very popular. This was during the time when Julian was experiencing a short but exciting gold rush.

The Oldest Hotel in Southern California

The hotel you see today was built in 1897. The original bakery and restaurant building was taken down to make space for it. The Julian Gold Rush Hotel is still open for guests today. It is the oldest hotel that has been open continuously in all of Southern California. When the hotel was being built, Albert Robinson planted cedar and locust trees around it. These trees are still standing there today!

Changes Over Time

This hotel has been in business for over 100 years. Over time, it has been made bigger and better. For example, in the 21st century, air conditioning was added. This was a big improvement for guests. The building has 16 rooms and has been carefully restored to look like it did in the past. Today, it is proudly known as the Julian Gold Rush Hotel.

The Robinsons' Journey

Albert Robinson was a person who had been enslaved. He came to Julian with the person who had enslaved him. During the gold rush days in Julian, many African-Americans in San Diego County lived in Julian. This was more than lived in the city of San Diego itself.

Another important African-American pioneer from that time was America Newton. She was also a person who had been enslaved. She worked as a laundress during the gold rush. America Newton was a friend of the Robinsons.

Albert and Margaret met in Julian. Albert was working as a cook at the time. They got married in the late 1880s. Albert passed away on June 10, 1915. Margaret sold the hotel in 1921.

Recognized as Historic

The Julian Gold Rush Hotel is very important for its history. Because of this, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as a special historic building in the United States.
