Julianna Margulies (born June 8, 1966) is a famous American actress. She is best known for her roles in popular TV shows. These include playing Carol Hathaway in the medical drama ER and Alicia Florrick in the legal drama The Good Wife.
Julianna has won many awards for her acting. She has received three Primetime Emmy Awards and eight Screen Actors Guild Awards. She also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2015, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Early life and education
Julianna Margulies was born in Spring Valley, New York. She was the youngest of three daughters. Her mother was a ballet dancer. Her father, Paul Margulies, was a writer and advertising executive.
Julianna's parents were both Jewish. They divorced when she was one year old. As a child, Julianna moved a lot with her mother. They lived in different places, including Sussex, England, and Paris, France. Because of this, French was her first language.
Julianna went to many different schools. She later studied at Sarah Lawrence College. She earned a degree in art history and English. While in college, she also acted in several plays. She first wanted to be a lawyer or a psychologist. But she soon discovered her love for acting.

Starting out: ER (1994–2000)
Julianna Margulies first appeared in a film in 1991. It was an action movie called Out for Justice. In 1994, she got a role in the TV show ER. She played Carol Hathaway, an emergency room nurse. Her character was supposed to die in the first episode. But viewers really liked her. So, the show's producers decided to keep her character alive.
George Clooney, who also starred in ER, told Julianna about the role. He encouraged her to wait for the offer. She joined the show in 1994. She stayed on ER for six seasons until 2000. She also returned for one episode in 2009.
Julianna won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1994 for her role. She was the only main cast member to win an Emmy for ER. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award four times.
She decided to leave ER after six years. She wanted to return to theater and try new roles. She also felt her character's story was changing in ways she didn't like. She turned down a large amount of money to stay. Julianna said she wanted to do what "fed me, as an actor." She felt she had done all she could with the character.
After ER: New roles (2000–2009)
After leaving ER, Julianna worked on stage and in films. She appeared in plays like Intrigue With Faye. She also starred in movies such as Evelyn and Ghost Ship in 2002.
She also took on roles in other TV shows. She was in the miniseries The Mists of Avalon in 2001. In 2004, she guest-starred in Scrubs. She also appeared in four episodes of The Sopranos in 2006. In 2006, she acted with Samuel L. Jackson in the film Snakes on a Plane.
Julianna was asked to return to ER many times. She finally came back for one episode in the show's final season in 2009. She said she and George Clooney felt they owed their careers to the show.
Starring in The Good Wife (2009–present)
In 2009, Julianna Margulies began her lead role in The Good Wife. This was a legal drama on CBS. She played Alicia Florrick, a lawyer who returns to work. Her character's husband resigned from his job due to a scandal.
Julianna won two more Primetime Emmy Awards for The Good Wife. She also won a Golden Globe Award. From 2011, she also became a producer for the show. The series finished in May 2016.
Julianna has said that Alicia Florrick and Carol Hathaway are her proudest roles. She thinks they are two of the best female characters on TV.
Since The Good Wife, Julianna has continued acting. In 2018, she was in the show Dietland. In 2019, she starred in The Hot Zone on National Geographic. This show became very popular.
In 2019, she was supposed to appear in The Good Fight, a spin-off of The Good Wife. However, they could not agree on her salary. She felt she should be paid fairly for her important role. In 2020, she joined the cast of The Morning Show on Apple TV+.
In 2021, Julianna reunited with her former ER cast members online. This was for a charity event. In 2024, she is set to return to Broadway in a new play.
Writing

Julianna Margulies has also written books. In 2016, she published a children's picture book. It is called Three Magic Balloons. The story is based on one her father wrote for her and her sisters.
In 2021, she released her autobiography. It is titled Sunshine Girl: An Unexpected Life. The book shares stories about her childhood. It also tells about her journey to becoming an actress. Julianna also recorded the audiobook version herself.

Julianna Margulies was in a relationship with actor Ron Eldard from 1991 to 2003.
On November 10, 2007, Julianna married attorney Keith Lieberthal. They have a son named Kieran Lindsay Lieberthal, born in 2008. The family lives in Manhattan. They also have a country house in Upstate New York.
Julianna is involved in charity work. She supports research for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). She also helps promote Holocaust education in schools.
