What is Julice Mound?
Julice Mound is found in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana. It's less than a mile away from the Transylvania Mounds. Experts think Julice Mound might be part of the same big complex of ancient sites.
The Mound's Features
The site has one main platform mound. A platform mound is a large, raised area of earth. Ancient people built these mounds for special buildings or ceremonies. This mound is located near a water channel. This channel flows into the mighty Mississippi River. It's also right next to Louisiana Highway 581.
Changes Over Time
In 1954, a survey described the mound as about 8 feet (2.4 m) tall. It had a small flat top, like a platform. Sadly, a large part of the mound was removed. This happened when Highway 581 was built. Now, only about one-third of the original mound remains.
Modern Measurements
Recent measurements show the mound is now about 9 feet (2.7 m) tall. Its base is about 130 feet (40 m) long and 65 feet (20 m) wide.
Discoveries at the Site
Archaeologists found pottery at Julice Mound. This pottery helps them understand when people lived there. The pottery shows that the site was used between 1200 and 1541 CE. This means people lived here for over 300 years!
