Early Life and Talents
Julie Gibson was born in Lewiston, Idaho, on September 6, 1913. Her birth name was Gladys Camille Soray. Her parents were Grover Cleveland Soray and Maude M. Soray.
Julie went to Lewiston High School. She and her older sister, Rea, loved to perform. Julie would sing, and Rea would play the ukulele. They even created a stage act called "Camille Soray and Her Girlfriends." They performed at The Granada Theatre.
Her Acting and Singing Career
Julie Gibson started her music career in 1935. She joined Bob Young's orchestra as a singer. She sang for a radio station in Salt Lake City. After winning a talent contest, she joined Eddie Duchin's Orchestra. She became well-known singing with the Jimmie Grier orchestra in 1937. That same year, she joined a radio show called Joe Penner's radio program.
First Film Roles
Julie made her first movie appearances in 1941. She had small parts in films like Nice Girl? and The Feminine Touch. Her first bigger role was in the 1944 film Lucky Cowboy.
After that, she got many starring roles. Some of her films included Chick Carter, Detective, Bowery Buckaroos, and Are You with It? She also appeared in two films with the Three Stooges: Three Smart Saps and Sock-a-Bye Baby.
Later Career and Behind the Scenes
In the 1950s, Julie mostly had smaller roles in movies and on TV. In the 1960s, she worked behind the scenes. She was a Dialogue Supervisor for many episodes of the TV show Family Affair. This meant she helped actors with their lines.
Julie also worked as an accent coach. She helped actors speak correctly for their characters. She even provided English voices for foreign stars in Italian and French films. She also sang for other actresses like Betty Hutton and Diana Lynn in some movies.
Her Personal Life
Julie Gibson was married three times. Her last marriage was to actor and film director Charles Barton. They were married from 1973 until he passed away in 1981. Julie did not have any children.
In 2004, she was interviewed by The Three Stooges Journal. She celebrated her 105th birthday in September 2018. Julie Gibson passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 2, 2019, at the age of 106.
