Early Netball Career
Julie Seymour was a physical education teacher before she became a full-time netball star. She first played for the Silver Ferns in 1994. The next year, she was chosen to play in the 1995 Netball World Championships in Manchester. New Zealand finished third in that competition.
In 1997, Julie wasn't selected for the Silver Ferns. So, she went back to athletics and finished second in the 800-meter race at the national championships in 1998.
That same year, netball became a sport at the Commonwealth Games for the first time. A new netball league also started in New Zealand. Julie joined the Canterbury Flames for this new league, called the Coca-Cola Cup. She also played for the Silver Ferns team that won a silver medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.
In 1999, she moved to play for the Capital Shakers team. She also rejoined the Silver Ferns for the 1999 Netball World Championships in Christchurch. The Silver Ferns won a silver medal, and Julie was named the best player of the tournament!
Leading the Silver Ferns
Julie returned to the Canterbury Flames in 2000 and became their captain. In 2002, she was chosen to be the captain of the Silver Ferns. She led New Zealand to another silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
However, just ten months into her captaincy, she took a break from the national team. This was because she was expecting her second child.
Julie continued to play for the Canterbury Flames until 2004, when she announced her retirement. But she made a comeback in 2006 after her third child was born! She didn't play in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, where New Zealand won gold. But she was called back to the Silver Ferns later that year. In 2007, Julie played in the 2007 Netball World Championships in Auckland, where the Silver Ferns finished second.
Playing in the ANZ Championship
The National Bank Cup, New Zealand's domestic league, ended in 2007. It was replaced by a new league called the ANZ Championship. This league included teams from both New Zealand and Australia. The Canterbury Flames became one of the New Zealand teams and were renamed the Canterbury Tactix.
Julie stayed with the Canterbury team and was named captain for the first ANZ Championship season in 2008. She also became the Silver Ferns captain again later that year.
The Tactix finished 8th in 2008 and 6th in 2009 during Julie's time in the ANZ Championship. At the end of the 2009 season, Julie announced she was retiring from all netball. This was because she was expecting her fourth child. After retiring as a player, Julie became an assistant coach for the Tactix team in 2010.
Personal Life
Julie Seymour is married to Dallas Seymour, a former All Black (New Zealand's national rugby team) player. Dallas and Julie have four children. All four of Julie's pregnancies happened during her long netball career!
