Julius Melvin Hodge (born November 18, 1983) is a basketball coach and former professional player. He is currently the head coach for the Lincoln Lions men's basketball team. Julius grew up in Harlem, New York.

He played college basketball at NC State. In 2005, the Denver Nuggets picked him in the 2005 NBA draft. Julius was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2004. He finished his college career by leading his team to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Early Life and Basketball Dreams

Julius Hodge was born in Harlem, a neighborhood in Manhattan. He grew up near Yankee Stadium. His mother, Mary Hodge, worked two jobs to support Julius and his two siblings. One of her jobs was as a teacher's aide.

Julius fell in love with basketball when he was five years old. His father took him to a New York Knicks game. They watched the Knicks play the Los Angeles Lakers at Madison Square Garden. During the game, Magic Johnson smiled at Julius from the court. Julius's older brother, Steven, was a big role model for him. Steven also played college basketball. He decided to name his younger brother after the famous basketball player Julius Erving.

High School Success

Julius Hodge went to St. Raymond High School for Boys in the Bronx, New York. In his senior year (2001), he was a top high school player. He was part of the McDonald's All-American Team. He was also named a First-team Parade All-American.

Julius also won the New York Mr. Basketball Award. The New York Daily News named him Player of the Year. He was also on the New York All-Metro Squad. Sports Illustrated named him their Old Spice Athlete of the Month. He scored 684 points in his senior year, which was a school record. ESPN rated him as the best shooting guard in the country. Many people were surprised when he chose to attend NC State for college.

College Career Highlights

As a freshman at NC State, Julius was a leading scorer. He averaged 10.7 points per game. He was named to the second-team All-ACC Tournament team. He also won the Lorenzo Charles Offensive Rebounding Award in 2002.

In the 2002–03 season, Hodge was chosen as a First Team All-ACC player. He set four personal bests during the ACC tournament. He also made the first-ever triple-double in Wolfpack history. A triple-double means getting double-digit numbers in three different stats (like points, rebounds, and assists). He was named ACC Player of the Week after leading his team to wins against Duke and North Carolina.

During the 2005 NCAA tournament, Julius made a game-winning shot against UConn. After finishing his senior year, Julius stayed at NC State. He completed his degree in communications.
