Early Life and Basketball Dreams
Julius Hodge was born in Harlem, a neighborhood in Manhattan. He grew up near Yankee Stadium. His mother, Mary Hodge, worked two jobs to support Julius and his two siblings. One of her jobs was as a teacher's aide.
Julius fell in love with basketball when he was five years old. His father took him to a New York Knicks game. They watched the Knicks play the Los Angeles Lakers at Madison Square Garden. During the game, Magic Johnson smiled at Julius from the court. Julius's older brother, Steven, was a big role model for him. Steven also played college basketball. He decided to name his younger brother after the famous basketball player Julius Erving.
High School Success
Julius Hodge went to St. Raymond High School for Boys in the Bronx, New York. In his senior year (2001), he was a top high school player. He was part of the McDonald's All-American Team. He was also named a First-team Parade All-American.
Julius also won the New York Mr. Basketball Award. The New York Daily News named him Player of the Year. He was also on the New York All-Metro Squad. Sports Illustrated named him their Old Spice Athlete of the Month. He scored 684 points in his senior year, which was a school record. ESPN rated him as the best shooting guard in the country.
