On July 29, 2018, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 hit the island of Lombok in Indonesia. It happened early in the morning at a shallow depth of about 6.4 kilometers (4 miles). Earthquakes that are shallow often cause more damage on the surface.
This earthquake caused a lot of damage across the island. Sadly, 20 people lost their lives, and hundreds more were hurt. Many homes and buildings were also damaged or destroyed.
The place where the earthquake started underground, called the epicentre, was in Sembalun Subdistrict, which is part of East Lombok Regency. This earthquake was actually a "foreshock." A foreshock is a smaller earthquake that happens before a bigger one. In this case, it happened a week before a much more powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the same island.
