West Nusa Tenggara (called Nusa Tenggara Barat or NTB in Indonesian) is a province in Indonesia. It is located in the western part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, but it does not include Bali. Bali is its own separate province.

The capital city of West Nusa Tenggara is Mataram, which is found on the island of Lombok. Mataram is also the largest city in the province. In 2010, about 4.5 million people lived here. The total area of the province is about 19,708 square kilometers.

The two biggest islands in West Nusa Tenggara are Lombok in the west and Sumbawa in the east.

Geography and Islands

West Nusa Tenggara is known for its beautiful islands. The two main islands are Lombok and Sumbawa. These islands are part of a larger group called the Lesser Sunda Islands.

Lombok Island

Lombok is the western island. It is home to the capital city, Mataram. Lombok is famous for its stunning beaches and the tall Mount Rinjani. Mount Rinjani is an active volcano and a popular spot for hiking.

Sumbawa Island

Sumbawa is the eastern island. It is larger than Lombok but has fewer people. Sumbawa is known for its wide-open spaces, surfing spots, and beautiful natural scenery.

People and Culture

The people of West Nusa Tenggara come from different ethnic groups. This makes the province rich in culture and traditions.

Ethnic Groups

  • The largest group is the Sasak people, who mostly live on Lombok. They make up about 68% of the population.
  • Other groups include the Bimese (14%) and Sumbawa (8%) from Sumbawa Island.
  • There are also smaller groups like the Balinese, Dompuan, and Javanese.

Languages

The official language is Indonesian. However, many local languages are also spoken. The Sasak people have their own language, and the Sumbawa and Bima people also have their unique languages.

Religion

Most people in West Nusa Tenggara follow the Islamic faith, making up about 96% of the population. There are also smaller communities of Hindus and Buddhists.

Economy and Tourism

The economy of West Nusa Tenggara relies on farming, fishing, and tourism. The beautiful beaches and natural parks attract many visitors.

Popular Tourist Spots

  • Mount Rinjani: A challenging but rewarding hike to the top of a volcano.
